what are moon signs and why are they important?

Most of us probably grow up knowing what our astrology Sun signs are.  Yes, that’s what you look out for in that zodiac column on the last page of some magazines.  Our zodiac sign can be derived from our birthday and there are a total of twelve signs that roughly corresponds to each month (for example, anyone born between March 24 to April 22 is an Aries and that refers to you being an Aries sun sign).  When you get a full astrological reading done however, you’ll get a chart drawn up that shows also signs of where the Moon and other planets such as Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn etc.  They’re basically the planetary positions at time of your birth.

The moon sign, often less talked of than the sun sign, is in my opinion, probably also very incredibly insightful in telling a person’s personality.  You do however need your birthtime to know your moon sign because the moon crosses over one zodiac sign every 2-3 days so it is possible for someone born in the same day to have a different Moon sign.

To understand the differences between the Sun and Moon sign, think of the difference between Yin and Yang.  Sun gives off light and can be seen during the day while the moon reflects light and moonlight shines at night. Symbolically therefore, the Sun sign is indicative of our outer personality, the side of us we show to the world more easily while the Moon sign better describes our more hidden selves, perhaps that side of us that only our close friends would know.  It would also explain why two people of the same Sun sign aren’t actually that much alike; say for example, someone whose Sun and Moon signs are both in Libra while another Libran sun sign person has her Moon sign in Scorpio.  Here you have a much more social Libra persona (Sun Moon Libra) vs. a Libra persona with a tendency for privacy (oops yes that’s the Scorpio moon!).

The Moon sign is very important in the sense that it points you to where you can find happiness because it tells us the source of your emotional fulfillment.  A Moon sign in cause-driven and entrepreneurial Aries may suggest someone who thrives on motivating others or inspiring others with causes that are meaningful to them and / or starting new exciting ventures; while someone with moon sign in chatty Gemini may feel deeply fulfilled engaging in intellectual communications or learning something new.

The moon sign also tells of the way we express our emotions.  Someone with their moon sign in Capricorn is likely to more controlled with their display of emotions while someone with their moon in the sign of Aries may display your emotions much more directly and quickly!

As an adult, we may have been conditioned or circumstances may force us to hide our emotions; young children however are much less filtered with their emotional expression; hence understanding the moon sign of your child can be very helpful to helping you understand their temperament, likes and dislikes too.

When I read children’s chart I look alot at their Moon sign because kids are likely to just be themselves without any filter or suppression of how they truly feel, they are likely to live out their moon signs in more overt ways than adults may be.

The beauty to astrology is knowing that there’s really no good or bad to whatever combination of energy your chart embodies, and having that self-awareness gives you permission to simply be yourself.
